Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary covers 90.44 square kilometers in a dry rain shadow region 1.5 hours from Munnar.

Receiving just 500 mm of annual rainfall, Chinnar offers a sharp contrast to the wet hills of Kerala. It protects rare species like Indian star tortoises, mugger crocodiles, and grizzled giant squirrels.

You can only explore the trails with a certified forest guide. Private vehicles can drive through on State Highway 17, but trekking off-trail is strictly banned to protect the fragile habitat.
